چکیده

Sneesby et al. recently suggested that adding trays in the stripping and rectifying sections of a reacti®e distillation column can degrade performance. This effect, if true, is not only counterintuiti®e, but ®ery disturbing because it suggests that the design of reacti®e distillation columns cannot use conser®ati®e estimates of tray numbers, that is, we cannot simply add excess trays, as in con®entional distillation. The problem is compounded by the uncertainty in ®apor liquid equilibrium data and tray efficiencies. This implies that de®eloping reacti®e distillation columns would require extensi®e experimental work at the pilot-plant and plant stages to find the numbers of stages offering the best performance. Such a scenario would mean long and expensi®e de®elopment programs. This article explores the effect of the number of trays in the rectifying andror ( ) stripping sections of reacti®e catalytic distillation columns. Three reacti®e distillation systems are used: an ideal hypothetical system, the ETBE system, and the methyl acetate system. Contrary to the published results, it is demonstrated that additional trays do not degrade performance. Two degrees of freedom a®ailable in all cases must be carefully chosen for fair comparisons.

Coordinated Control of Reactive Distillation Systems by Manipulating Feed Locations

The effects of feed locations to the control of reactive distillation are explored. In this work, ideal reactive distillation systems are used to illustrate the advantage of feed trays optimisations in control. Because the temperature and composition profiles are critical for an effective utilization of the reactive zone, the optimal feed locations are essential for improved performance. Quanti...

Numerically Optimized Performance of Diabatic Distillation Columns

Recently, the concept of equal thermodynamic distance (ETD) has been proposed to minimize entropy production in a distillation process using a diabatic column. ETD gives the optimal temperature profile to first-order in N−1, where N is the number of trays. ETD however, does not in general give the true minimum for distillation columns with few trays. We therefore apply a fully numerical, multid...

Analysis and Modeling of Vapor Recompressive Distillation Using ASPEN-HYSYS

HYSYS process modeling software was used to analyze the effect of reflux ratio and number of trays on the purity of ethylene in a vapor recompression distillation column and also in an ordinary distillation column. Analysis of data showed that with increased pressure a higher reflux ratio is needed to obtain a purity of 99.9% for both towers. In addition number of trays was varied to see its ef...
